Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has said the Southern Kaduna People’s Union, (SOKAPU) was only supporting Bishop Mathew Kukah’s ideology on coup in the country because it has lost its relevance.
The forum stated this in response to SOKAPU youth wing’s rejoinder to its call for Bishop Kukah’s arrest for delivering the controversial Christmas message.
The SOKAPU youth wing in a terse press release signed by its national leader, John Isaac had earlier described the call for Bishop Kukah’s arrest by AYCF, as baseless and senseless, saying that the cleric only bared his mind “out of love for country, considering the gross nepotistic leadership style of the president and his administration, and that the president would had been long over thrown if he were to be a Non-Northern Muslim.”
But in statement by Kaduna’ state’s AYCF’ Chairman, Sagir Umar, he described both Reverend Kukah’s utterance and its justification by SOKAPU as treasonable.
Umar however insisted that SOKAPU reaction to its call for decisive action against Kukah shows desperate attempt by the union to regain relevance after “its several mischievous machinations that involve the manipulation of religion to perpetrate violence in the southern part of the state has been bursted and its grip on the poor ethnicities of the area slackened.”

According to him, “SOKAPU’s frustrated desperation, veiled in a recent statement purportedly in response to our disagreement with Mathew Hassan Kukah’s treacherous call to mutiny against the state came a few months after it was silenced by a group of peace loving southern Kaduna indigenes who rejected their divisive antics.
“For the avoidance of doubt, no amount of pressure would make the AYCF and all law abiding Nigerians and the civilized global community to accept such incitive utterances by Kukah or any other person as democratically legitimate.
“And since we’re in a society that is supposed to be governed by democratic norms and values we insist that Kukah’s utterances amount to felony against the Nigerian state and he should be interrogated.
“The second argument that further exposed SOKAPU’S frustration and desperation for the glory that it has lost, is when it expressly endorsed Kukah’s call for a coup against a democratically elected government by citing the 1983 coup as justification.
“All over the world, military coups by any group or persons have never been justifiable. Besides unlike Kukah’s attempt to blame Northern Muslims of toppling southern leaders, SOKAPU’S example proves that all coups championed by Northern Muslims officers were against fellow northern Muslim leaders.
Therefore either SOKAPU or Kukah or both, must in some desperation to concoct lies which points to a much wider, mega clandestine plot against the Nigerian state which is in itself treasonable.
