Nasarawa State government said it has sent home about 40 Almajiri children back to their various states of origin.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Halima Jabiru stated this yesterday in Lafia while addressing the Almajiris before they were sent to their various states.

She said the sending home of the Almajiri children to their home states was a collective decision of all the Northern governors with a bid to ensuring that the children are saved from the streets.

She thanked Governor Abdullahi Sule for providing all the logistics needed for the exercise, adding that it was because of the love the governor has for the children that he took the decision of reuniting them with their families.

The Commissioner said the batch was intercepted while trying to enter the state from Zaria in Kaduna State.

She decried the attitudes of some Alaranmas who hide some of the children during the exercise only to return them back to the streets when they could no longer bear the burden of catering for their needs.

She said the Alaranmas who harbour these children have been charged to court and tried in accordance with the Executive Order recently signed into law by Governor Sule.
