Ifemeje emerges UNIZIK Faculty of law Dean

Professor Sylvia Chika Ifemeje of the Department of  Jurisprudence and International law has been elected  new Dean Faculty of Law, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), thus making her  the first female to be elected as the Dean of the Faculty, since the inception of the faculty.

In the election that was keenly contested,  Prof. Ifemeje polled a total of 23 votes to defeat  Prof. Ogugua Ikpeze  who polled 18 votes and  Prof. Emmanuel Obidimma garnered  16 votes to come third in the election. The total number of accredited votes cast in the election was 57.

Professor Ifemeje Sylvia Chika was born on May 14, 1967 at Ozubulu, Anambra State. She started her educational career at Abuano Primary Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State 1972-1975 and completed at  Abadina Primary School, University of Ibadan, Ibadan 1975-1978.

She attended Abadina College, University of Ibadan, Ibadan between 1978 and 1983 from where she proceeded to    University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife from 1983-1987.

She attended the Nigerian Law School, Victoria Island, Lagos  1987-and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988.

She went back to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka for her Masters Laws degree (LL.M) between 1999 and 2002 and bagged her Ph.D from the same university in  2007.

Prof. Ifemeje started her legal career as a legal practitioner at  Ogo Chambers Awka 1993-2000 and in 2002 .

She joined the Faculty of Law, UNIZIK as Assistant Lecturer from where She rose to become a Professor of Law in 2015-2018.

She has attended several professional and International conferences including:

Nigerian Bar Association Conference, Port Harcourt in August, 1992; 40th Law Teachers’ Annual Conference, Lagos  May,2004; 41st Law Teachers’ Annual Conferences, Jos   June, 2005;  42nd Law Teachers’ Annual Conference,  Umuahia May, 2009; 43rd Law Teacher Conference State University Anyigba May, 2010

She also attended and presented a paper at 8th International  conference July,  2011.

Association for the Study of Sexuality, Culture and Society Conference, Madrid, Spain. he also ttended44th Law Teachers’ Annual Conference, Rivers State- July 2011University of Port Harcourt; attended and Presented a paper on Gender at 8th Igbo Studies – April 2012 association conference University of Howard, Washington D.CUSA-April 2012.

She attended and presented a paper at the 10th Igbo Studies Association Conference, Dominican University Illinois- May 2014, Chicago USA; Attended47th Law Teacher’s Conference, Ebonyi State University Abakaliki Ebonyi State June 2014.

Prof Ifemeje also attended 48th Law Teacher’s Conference, Annual Conference June 2015 at Afe Babalola University Ado- Ekiti (ABUAD). She attended and presented a paper at 7th International Conference on Information Law and Ethics, University of

Pretoria, South Africa – February 2016 and other numerous local and international conferences till date.   She has supervised numerous post graduate thesis at both Master of Laws ( LL. M) and Doctor of Laws ( Ph. D) in her academic career.

She is widely published in both academic and sundry international Journals.

She has equally held different offices in the university at different times. She has served the Faculty of law in numerous ways and She is  Chairperson, Faculty of Law International.

Conference and Linkages Committee 2017 till date; Chairperson, Faculty of Law Examination board 2017 till date; Malpractice Panel.

She was treasurer, Nigerian Bar Association Awka Branch 1994-1996; Member Awka Catholic Diocese Justice Peace; Development Commission (JDPC), Awka. 2002 till date; Present Staff Adviser, Nigerian Federation of    Catholic Students St. Joseph the Worker Chaplaincy,NAU (Mgbajiaka Chapter) 2004-till date;  Treasurer, Obafemi Awolowo University Alumni Association (Awka Branch), 2011 till date; Former Legal Adviser, Obafemi Awolowo University; Alumni Associations. (Awka Branch), 1998-2002; Patroness Nigerian Federations of Catholic Students  St. Joseph the Worker Chaplaincy, NAU 2010-2014  Mgbajiaka (Chapter). Member the Board of Governors of Aquinas 2013- to date among others.
