The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Kolawole Salako, has called for the use of technology in resolving the herders/farmers crisis.

In his keynote address at the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) awards and book presentation in Abeokuta at the weekend, Salako said technology could be deployed through satellite maps and data, digital field tools and laboratory equipment, I.C.T. and software applications for agriculture as well as drone.

Prof. Woke Soyinka, who presented his book, “Chronicles of the Happiest People on Earth”, at the event, said the Honorary Award (Doctor of Letters) conferred on him by FUNAAB in 2019 would be the last award he would accept.

Explaining why he would not take any other award after the one bestowed on him by FUNAAB, the Nobel laureate said he had so many already.

“A few years ago at FUNAAB, I accepted an honorary doctorate. I did warn at the time that I’m tired of this awards and I said this would be the last doctorate I should be awarded after accepting from many institutions. I’m accepting this one only because it is an OMO award, I want you all to bear me witness. Anytime I have to decline another award, I should say go and tell them in Abeokuta that I have already made a statement and I must keep to it,” he said.

Speaking on the state of the nation, Prof. Soyinka condemned kidnapping of pupils and students by bandits.

He called for a collective approach toward ending insecurity.

“We cannot permit ourselves to accept child hostage taken as a way of life. We just cannot continue in this action. Something drastic and meaningful must be done and it has to be collective. This is no longer the responsibilities of those we have been thought to be in charge of security and governance. They have clearly failed the populace, they have failed us,” he said.

Salako was presented with the best Vice Chancellor Award.
