Delta advised to construct permanent IDP camps

The Delta State government has been urged to build permanent Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps across the state to cater for victims of flood every year.

The call was made in a communiqué issued by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council at the end of its Congress, yesterday.

Recall that the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu had announced that Delta State will be among other coastal states likely to experience heavy flooding last month, enjoining states to make efforts to mitigate the impact.

Several council areas in Delta State fall within the “highly probable risk areas” from the forecast.

The NUJ statement signed by the state Chairman and Secretary, Comrades Michael Ikeogwu and Patrick Ochei said constructing permanent IDP camps was necessary because residents are sacked annually from their homes due to flood.

“The union called on the Delta State government to construct permanent Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps at strategic locations to take care of people sacked from their homes annually by flood, especially parts of Oshimili South, Aniocha South, Ndokwa Federal Constituency, Isoko, Ughelli, Warri, Ewu, Okwagbe and other riverside communities,” it said.
