No fewer than 15 rural communities in the North and South have been provided with access to clean water, courtesy of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) led by its National President, Hajiya Nana Aisha Gambo.

Hajia Gambo, through her Clean Water project, is supporting the government efforts at providing access to clean water across rural areas in the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory.

Four communities in River State, one each in Delta, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger and Edo states, three each in the FCT and Kano state have benefited.

Hajiya Aisha said she was touched by the knowledge that a lot of communities in Nigeria still do not have access to clean water.

According to the association, when Hajiya Gambo assumed office on February 27, her first task was to provide portable drinking water for two communities that had suffered from the lack of drinking water for years.

Under her leadership, the Nigerian Navy inaugurated a 120-bed female student hostel at the NOWA Secondary School Calabar in Cross River State, headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command.

The accommodation complex was designed as a storey building consisting of 12 large rooms, built to ensure a capacity of ten double bunks in each room.

The Naval Officers’ Wives Association, once a small group of women gathering to provide emotional, social, and economic support to wives of naval officers and ratings in and out of the barracks, has grown into a prolific and influential association.

NOWA is working on a series of capacity building programs that have enhanced skills acquisition guided to help improve the quality of lives of families and children of Nigerian Navy personnel and their relations.
