Speakers of 35 Houses of Assembly in Nigeria have called for the inclusion of community policing and state police in the ongoing Constitutional Review to tackle insecurity.
The legislators, in a communique issued at its second-quarter meeting of Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria which held at the weekend in Asaba, the Delta State capital, decried the spate of insecurity in the country.
They, however, commended the Federal Government’s efforts at fighting insecurity.
They urged Governors yet to implement financial autonomy for their State legislature to do so as agreed in the Memorandum of Action.

They further called on State Houses of Assembly to pass the Funds Management Bill for the assent of State Governors within the forty-five-day window as agreed by stakeholders.
Part of the communiqué reads: “The Conference decries the spate of insecurity in the country; and while commending the Federal Government on its efforts at fighting the insecurity in the country, the Conference calls on the major stakeholders to use the instrumentality of the ongoing Review of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to accommodate Community Policing and State Police in the country to effectively tackle the insecurity bedevilling the country.
“The Conference commends the Governors that have commenced the implementation of the financial autonomy in their states while urging the other state governors to follow suit as agreed in the Memorandum of Action signed by all the stakeholders.
“The Conference also calls on all the State Houses of Assembly to pass Funds Management Bill for Assent of the Governors within the Forty-Five-day window as agreed to by all the stakeholders.”
