Players and officials of the Nigeria home-based men’s national football team are expected back in Nigeria tomorrow.

The team, composed of players from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) are expected to arrive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja in the morning from the USA where they were defeated 4-0 by Mexico at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Sunday morning.

The team’s inexperience showed as they fell to the Mexicans with goals from Hector Herrera, Rogelio Funes Mori and Jonathan dos Santos.

The star–studded El Tri mined immense psychological advantage from scoring two goals in the opening four minutes as Nigeria’s defenders were still settling into the encounter. Captain Anayo Iwuala scuffed an opportunity and tripped on another, and El Tri went ahead to score two second half goals to wrap up the tie.

The friendly match was part of preparations for the start of qualifying matches, scheduled to begin before the end of the year, for the seventh edition of the  African Nations Championship (CHAN) to be staged in Algeria in 2023.
