The Nasarawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned that if the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission, (NASIEC) does not reduce the cost of the nomination form, many political parties may be denied participation in the upcoming council election.
The state Chairman of PDP, Chief Francis Orogun disclosed this yesterday at the inauguration of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at the state Secretariat along Jos Road, Lafia the state capital.
“The NASIEC yesterday announced that sales of forms for the position of local government chairman are N500, 000 while that of councillor position is N200, 000. As it is right now, it is only the state government that can afford to buy these for its candidates,” Orogu alleged.
Mr Orogu, who gave the warning said that the present economic challenges make it hard for many interested contestants, noting that if the NASIEC insists, many political parties may be edged out from participating in the forthcoming council election.
The PDP chairman noted however that the APC may be using the high cost of nomination forms to deny other political parties who may not have much money now. He alleged that the ruling party would use state funds to pay for their candidates.
Orogu also urged the NASIEC to reconsider the one week given in its timetable for primaries to be conducted.
