Task force demolishes structures in Lekki

Days after a three-day removal notice was issued to owners of illegal structures and abandoned vehicles along the Lekki Coastal Road, the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit has carried out its threat.

The task force at the weekend demolished thousands of shanties and kiosks alleged to be impeding construction work on the alternate road linking the Free Trade Zone.

A statement yesterday by the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) of the agency, Femi Moliki, said the government would monitor to prevent future encroachment and illegal occupation of any part of the Lekki Coastal Road.

Quoting the agency’s chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, Moliki said the government in December 2019, demolished all structures built on the road to pave way for its usage by motorists and other road users but the occupants mobilised themselves and expanded their occupation of the road.

“They have turned it into hideouts for criminals. They sell drugs and some of these were seized during our assessment of the area. Traffic robbers and other dangerous criminals dwell here.
