Jaiz Charity and Development Foundation has empowered 73 people with N10 million.
The beneficiaries went home with grinding machines, welding machines, power generating sets, laptops and cheques.
Former Lagos state Commissioner for Home Affairs Dr AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, who chaired the event, hailed Jaiz foundation for empowering the needy.
He urged other non-governmental organisations to engage in similar projects by assisting people around them.
According to the, poverty is a major cause of crime in the society.

“The fact that so many people are idle and challenged would encourage crime. This sort of initiative will greatly reduce that.”
Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Dr Abdullah Shuaib, said: “Our intervention in the past has yielded positive results as beneficiaries’ businesses became expanded and this would alleviate poverty in our society. More people will be engaged and we believe that these people would be self-sufficient and they will no longer be dependent on people and that will prevent many from asking for alms. The empowerment will make them have what they can earn from, a legitimate source of livelihood.
“We are still in the formative stage of our intervention using the Zakat fund. The foundation started the disbursement in 2016. We do other interventions without using the Zakat fund and we are doing well in those areas especially in the North East, West and Central.”
