The ancient kingdom of Kano celebrated one of its grandest moments last weekend as Nigeria’s top player Bello Buba powered the high profile Nakudu Farm team to victory at the just concluded Emir of Kano Coronation polo.
Buba scored three goals as Nakudu Farm parading team patron, Senator Sabo Nakudu, Abdulsalam Gashash and CSP Michika overwhelmed Nakudu Tannery boosting Yakubu Nakudu, Idris Ahmed, Ibrahim Abdul and Ali Birjawi 5-3, to win the Governor Cup, just as Golden Alchemy squad defeated their Kano SMR opponents, to win the Coronation Cup Crown.
The grandiose polo fiesta was organized and hosted by Senator Nakudu to honour the 15th Emir of
Kano, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero whose coronation ceremony took place last month at the Sani Abacha Stadium in ancient city.
The fiesta decided at the pristine Porto Golf and Polo Resort at Minjibir, Kano, before a high profile crowd that included traditional rulers, top government officials and business tycoons who were on hand to honour the Emir, saw the Ibrahmi Kollere led Porto team outpaced their Porto Hotel opponents, to win the Bashir Dantata Cup.
Other proud winners of the exciting tourney that pitched over twelve ambitious teams from across the country, include Lagos Agad team that defeated a crowded field of five teams, to win the Nakudu Cup, while the debuting Vogue Garden team edged Kano Rumbu to clinch the Porto Cup.
Chairman of Kano Polo Club, Bashir Dantata who witnessed the event, expressed delight at the decision by the Porto Resort to honour the Emir who is the Grand Patron of the noble game in Kano, adding that
polo will continue to foster unity in the kingdom and the country at large.
Kano Polo Captain, Tajudeen Dantata who accompanied the Senator Nakudu and the Chief Celebrant, the Emir of Kano, to give out prizes to proud winners during the closing ceremony, lauded the players for their sportsmanship and the organizers for hosting the memorable and exciting tournament.
“I want to commend the organizers and the resort for its choice of polo as a way of showcasing to the world that the state welcomes prospective investors as the polo continue to serve as a world-class recreation and quality hospitality,” he added in his closing remarks.
Tournament Manager, Yakubu Nakudu who promised more exciting polo events to be hosted by the exclusive resort, thanks all participants, traditional rulers and the invited dignitaries who turned up in their droves add glamour to the coronation tournament.
It should be recalled it was the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo that led other dignitaries to the coronation ceremony of the 15th Emir from the Fulani Sullubawa clan who was born in 1961. He ascended the throne on March 9, 2020.
