A 49-year-old commercial driver, Mr. Olalekan Adedeji, was yesterday arraigned at an Osun State Magistrates’ Court, sitting in Ilesha, for allegedly causing the death of six passengers.

He was charged with six counts of dangerous driving, damage and driving without road documents.

Prosecutor Inspector Jacob Akintunde told the court that “on July 17, around 6:45pm, on Ilesha/Ife expressway, Osu in Osun State, you drove Yotang Luxurious bus in a dangerous manner, which caused the death of six passengers in a Toyota Hiace and also damaged the vehicle valued at N29million.”

He said Adedeji drove on the highway without an insurance certificate and expired roadworthiness.

“The offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 139, 142 and 548 of RTA laws of Nigeria 2015.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty.

His counsel, V. C. Dadi, urged the court to admit him to bail in the most liberal term.

The prosecutor opposed the bail, noting that six passengers were killed and belongings worth millions of Naira were damaged.

Presiding magistrate Mrs. Modupe Awodele granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N5million, with two sureties.

She adjourned the matter till September 9.
