As the glamorous 2021 Kano International Polo Tournament draws nearer, the ancient city is giddy with excitement.
Clearly the biggest annual event in Kano’s sporting calendar, the polo fiesta is billed for the legendary Usman Dantata polo ground in Bompai.
Kano Polo CaptainbTajudeen Dantata who dropped this hint, said preparations for the annual festival of the game of kings would move to higher gears immediately after the Emir of Kano Coronation Tournament in Munjibir.
The prestigious Kano Polo tournament is one of the only international polo fiestas that are decided over two weeks of high octane galloping games with all the attendant participation of top professionals from Europe and Argentina. The other is the highly revered Lagos international polo festival.
The Nationsport gathered that the first week of the polo grand slam offers two major prizes, the glittering Dantata Cup that has remained the second most-wanted polo prize in Kano for over four decades now. There is crowded MRS Cup that traditionally attracts over twenty teams from across the country.

The second and the grand finale stage of the Kano polo festival that is revered as the biggest sporting and tourism attraction to the ancient commercial city traditionally draws out the big guns with all the top patrons leading their teams in quest of the event’s most wanted prize, the Emir of Kano Cup.
The medium-goal Dangote Cup which is the second prize on offer in the second stage completes the lineup of top laurels to be won during the two weeks Kano festival that usually draws polo lovers and tourists from across the continent and other parts of the globe.
Subsidiary prizes to be won during the 2021 polo carnival include the ever-vibrant Usman Dantata Cup, Audu Lukat Cup and the Muhammadu Sanusi Cup and the Murtala Mohammed Cup, among others
Meanwhile, five of Nigeria’s biggest high-goal teams, El-Amin, Trappco Ranch, Rubicon, Malcomines and Lintex, are bracing for another epic battle as the much-awaited 2021 Kano International Polo Tournament.
Dantata who maintained that the final tournament date would soon be rectified and made public, however stated that the organizing committee that has been holding meetings with sponsors and partners of the tournament, hope to stick to the traditional September date of the grand fiesta.
“We are pushing to increase spectator turnout this year, while creating more opportunities for home based players. The level of team interest is inspiring and we look forward to watching the competition unfold in what promises to be the most exciting high-goal season ever,” he stated.
“Our vision is to make sure that the noble game is played across the country by more and more Nigerians’. We want to be able to show the world that Kano and indeed Nigeria can play polo at the global stage, and we’ve proven that over the decades with our tournament.” Dantata added.
