Abiru said: The passage of Baba is a personal loss to me because the late Fourth Republic senator was a father figure to me. He was very supportive in my quest to represent the good people of Lagos East Senatorial District in the Senate and played a great advisory role after my victory.
“We remained in touch till August 7 when I assured him via a phone conversation that I would visit him on my return from vacation abroad on August 24. However, I was sad to learn of his death on August 24 when I arrived in Nigeria.
“Papa was an astute progressive and an elder statesman, who gave his best to the service of the nation. He stood like a rock of Gibraltar against the vicious military dictatorship as one of the prominent leaders of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), who fought the military to a standstill.
“He left enviable legacies as a federal legislator and later as the chairman of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC).”
