Enugu Assembly passes anti-open grazing bill

Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday passed the Prohibition of Open Grazing and Regulation of Cattle Ranching Bill into law.

This is happening two days after the house held a public hearing on the bill.

The passage followed the consideration of the report of public hearing presented by the Chairman of the joint committee, Mrs. Amaka Ugwueze, co-chairmen of the committee, Emma Ugwuerua and Okwu Chinedu.

The bill, sponsored by the leader of the house, Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, is expected to forestall farmers/herders clashes and stop killing and raping of women by herdsmen.

Speaker Edward Ubosi thanked the sponsors of the bill, noting that the people had been clamouring for the law for a long time.

He hoped that Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi would not waste time in assenting the law.

Ubosi said the law was not against anybody or group, but for the good of the indigenes and others that lived in the state.
