Akpata to lead Nigeria Cricket Federation

• Taekwondo, rugby, judo get new presidents

Former Vice President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), Uyiekpen Akpata has emerged as the new president of the federation just as taekwondo, rugby and judo federations got new presidents.

At the sports federation elections held in Abuja yesterday, Akpata, whose contribution to crickets cannot be underestimated was elected as the South-South representative.

In rugby, a former Director of Grassroots Sports Development at the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Ademola Are emerged as the new president. Are was elected unopposed and won by 10 votes from the 11 accredited voters that took part in the poll.

In judo, South West representative Musa Oshodi was elected unopposed as president.

Also, the national federation elections saw the emergence of Abdul Ibrahim as President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, while Emeka Nwankwo secured the vice-president position.

Speaking later, Ibrahim promised to ensure the development of the game at the grassroots.

In handball, Sam Ocheho was re-elected after he defeated Jubril Saidu by 7-6 votes to return as president of Handball Federation of Nigeria.

In wrestling and table tennis, Daniel Igali and Ishaku Tikon were re-elected for another four-year term as presidents. Giadomenico Massari was returned as president of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria for another four years.

Engr Massari was voted overwhelmingly by the 15 board members accredited for the exercise.

Also elected unopposed as Vice President of the CFN, is Dr. Ago Habu Abdulrahman representing the North East constituency.

In taekwondo, former Vice President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Abdullahi Saidu has emerged as the new president. Saidu defeated Jonathan Nnaji eight to five votes to replace Margaret Binga.
