Inter joins race for free-scoring Onuachu

Paul Onuachu

Super Eagles’ rave of the moment Paul Onuachu might join the exclusive list of Nigerians to star for Italian Serie A giants Inter Milan with words rife that the  Nerazzurri (The Black and Blues) has joined the race to sign the KRC Genk star.

Notable Nigerians who had played for Inter included the duo of Nwankwo Kanu and Taribo West who won the now rested UEFA Cup in 1998.

Similarly,  Obafemi Martins featured prominently for the team and  won the Scudetto in 2006; and there was also Joel Obi who won the Coppa Italia in 2011 and most recently Victor Moses who was a 2020 UEFA Europa League runner-up despite being away on loan at Spartak Moscow in Russia.

Following his rich scoring form in the Belgian Jupiler League, Onuachu has attracted attention from some of the big European sides but with no concrete offers, he extended his contract till 2024 with Genk in June.

Italian football outlet,  footballitalia.net, yesterday claimed  Inter is now among the contenders for KRC Genk and Nigeria international striker Onuachu.

The 27-year-old made the move from FC Midtjylland to Genk in 2019 and is having a great campaign, scoring 11 goals in just 14 competitive appearances so far this season.

His height is the main selling point, standing at 2.01 metres (6ft 7in), which prompted comparisons with current Inter centre-forward Edin Dzeko and former San Siro player Nwankwo Kanu.

Alexis Sanchez is widely expected to leave Inter in January, which opens up a slot for a new forward.

However, the Nerazzurri face competition from Atletico Madrid and Arsenal, while the 25m Euros asking price is also a huge sticking point.
