Why music artists become uncontrollable – Idowu Tella, Billionaire Mafia CEO

The Chief Executive Officer and founder of a record label operating in United States of America and Nigeria, Prince Idowu Adegbite Tella, has explained why there is always friction between label records and music artists.

He said  the contract between music artists and label record label is a marriage of convenience, which may or may not last, oftentimes as a result of greed on both sides of the contract.

Tella pointed out that while both parties may be culpable, the artist seems to be the usual suspect in the fight that ensues, because of the “I have blown” syndrome that comes into play, making the artist more or less become uncontrollable.

“ It is true that when some artists become popular and are making waves they become almost uncontrollable.

“But there’s still what we call individual differences as well. There are some that keep their heads down. Artists like Mayorkun and Yemi Alade have distinguished themselves in this regard.

“In spite of the huge popularity they enjoy they have been able to keep their heads down and working in harmony with their respective labels.

“Not many artists display that level of maturity but these two and some others I cannot remember off hand now have been exemplary in their disposition and control,” he said.

He attributed the developments to greed, which he said can happen on the artist side or on the record label side.

“Most of these artists can be ungrateful as well because you should never forget the spoon that fed you when there was nothing and now they feel they don’t need their record label again and can do things on their own. Once an artist blows, as they say here in Nigeria they can blow in all respects,” he added.

He said the notion that record labels are typically set up to exploit artists is a farce and does not work with Billionaire Mafia Records because they give their artists free hand, with good structure for them to operate and concentrate on the creative aspect of their business while the label takes care of business and welfare.

“In the case of newly signed artists, Billionaire Mafia Record Label does not control the type of music the artist records, which can include everything from the way the music sounds to the song lyrics.

“I let my artist do his thijgs. I believe in him and his style and that’s why I signed him. What I look for before signing an artist under us is the talent, personality and your hunger or drive to succeed,” he stated

“As a record label, you need people with experience in the industry to help you even though they will swindle some of your money but you will learn and that experience will help you thrive. We are still a baby in the industry for now but soon we are going to be the giant of the world,” he declared.

Apart from running his record label in Nigeria, Tella also owns a company that is into student travels and agencies in two countries.

He works for the University of Georgia as the International Student Recruiting Officer as well.

One of their artists is the wave-making singer, Austin Boss who in a separate interview describes the Billionaire Mafia Records as family-oriented.
