Chukwueze chases historic AFCON with Eagles

After winning Europa League Cup with Villarreal, Samuel Chukwueze said his ambition was to win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with the Super Eagles.

The 22-year-old played a vital role in helping Villarreal claim their first Europa League title last year while netting a goal and with four assists in his 11 appearances for the Spanish Club. He, however, missed the final due to an injury he sustained in the semifinals against Arsenal.

At this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, the former Under-17 star is looking to rise from the disappointment of the 2019 semifinal, which Nigeria lost to Algeria.

At AFCON, he netted the first goal in Nigeria’s 3-1 bashing of Sudan at the weekend, while aiming to clinch his first international trophy in Cameroon.

“For now, I don’t miss my club, I’m just focusing on my country,” he told Brila TV.“I need to do everything possible for them to win the trophy. I’ve won a trophy for my club, so I want to win a trophy for my country also so that they will remember me,” he added.

Nigeria face Guinea-Bissau tomorrow having already secured a spot in the knockout stages after their 3-1 victory over Sudan.
