The family of 26-year-old Adekunle Ojo has called on the police to investigate his death in a hotel’s swimming pool on Valentine’s Day.
Ojo, a vulcaniser, was said to have died in the wee hours of Tuesday at Ose Gold Hotel, Baruwa, Ipaja, where he spent time with friends on February 14.
The bereaved father, Femi Ojo, who spoke to The Nation, said he was shocked when he got information that his son had died, raising questions on the circumstances surrounding his death.
He claimed that the hotel didn’t notify them of the incident till around 10am on Tuesday whereas his son died around 3am.
The deceased’s fatherm, who said there were irregularities on the hotel’s account of the incident, stated that Adekunle’s siblings and uncles who watched the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, noticed some that soem of the recordings were tampered with.
“First, the hotel claimed that my son just dived into the pool and there was no one inside. But when my children and their uncle watched the CCTV, they saw that people were inside the pool swimming. They claimed he drowned on his own but my son is a very good swimmer and his siblings saw cuts on his neck and back.
“Another disturbing thing they discovered was that the footage of the time of death was blank, suggesting that the video was tampered with. The record of when he was swimming was seen. They saw how he moved front and back but what happened afterwards was just black. The next thing they saw was people rushing out of the water and carrying him out.”
Efforts to speak to the hotel’s management were unfruitful as the manager, one Michael, who our correspondent contacted on phone, promised to revert but did not at the time of this report.
Police spokesman, Adekunle Ajisebutu confirmed the incident, adding that the hotel owner and diver had been arrested.
