Kano police arrest 2,606 suspects in one year

The police command in Kano arrested 2,606 suspects for various crimes between February 19, 2021 and February 19 this year, Police Commissioner Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko said yesterday.

Dikko said when he assumed duty in the state on February 19, 2021, there were security challenges such as kidnapping and armed robbery in 17 frontline border local government areas.

Those arrested -most of them charged to court, were two Boko Haram suspects, he said, adding that 264 were apprehended for armed robbery, 140 for kidnapping, 12 for human trafficking, 88 for rape, 34 for culpable homicide, 12 for operating illegal rehabilitation centres, 89 for fraud and 33 for cattle rustling.

Some were held for drugs and a raft of other offences.

Dikko said the command rescued 160 victims of illegal confinement, 40 kidnap victims, nine human traffic victims and two victims of solitary confinement.

The police commissioner said the police recovered 73 rifles including one SMG, one AK-49, six AK-47s, four pistols, 59 locally-made guns, and one pump action rifle as well as 30 rounds of live ammunition.

Other items recovered were 129 vehicles, 107 tricycles, 64 motorcycles, three bicycles, 52 cows, nine sheep, 874 knives, 93 clubs, six cutlasses, and 1,042 packets of Tramadol valued N29,754,000, 14 cartons of fake drugs valued N2,400,000, 599 parcels of Indian Hemp valued  N22,261,000, among others.
