As the world marks International Social Workers’ Day, social workers have urged authorities to intensify efforts at ensuring that the bill for women emancipation is re-presented and passed into law.
They reiterated the readiness to rehabilitate and reintegrate returnees from the Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking at a briefing yesterday in Ikeja, Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASoW), Lagos State chapter, Mrs. Morayo Lamilisa, described social workers as professionals specially trained in humanitarian services.
She lamented that despite the mechanism and efforts put in place by sectors, social work was yet to be legislated.
This, she said, did not put the association on the same pedestal with others in social work practice across the globe.
Lamilisa appealed to authorities and those that had one connection or the other with governors, senators, House of Representatives members and state lawmakers to intensify efforts in re-presenting the passing of the ‘Nigeria Council for Social Work Establishment Bill’ into law.
The Local Organising Committee (LoC) Chairperson for the conference, Mrs. Oyelakin Aderonke, spoke about social workers professionalism, which she said included training, ethics, code of conduct and methodology to address mental issues, community and domestic problems.
She said all hands should be on deck to address the problems, hence the call on members to work to make this year’s event successful.
