Nigerian women intensify training for T20 tourney

Eighteen finalists have resumed the last phase of training for Inaugural Nigeria’s Women International T20 Tournament billed to start in Lagos from March 26.

Following their arrival on Monday , the team has quickly settled into intensive training ahead of the six-nation event that the country would be hosting.

National Coach and High-Performance Manager, Asanka Gurusinha, who is overseeing the team’s activities , has hinted that the national women’s team, like every other national team, is strictly running on a structured programme that the team managers are expected to implement.

“All the national coaches are working together and their regimen is one that is synched together,” he added.

Meanwhile,  the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, Uyi Akpata has also praised the technical team of the federation  for designing  a common technical structure that is presently being deployed to the national women’s team’s technical team.

“Among other things, we are looking forward to see a better Nigeria’s female national team and one that reflects the growing depth of the technical team of the Federation,” he said.

The 18-player team would be trimmed to 14 who would execute the tournament for the country.

Rwanda, Ghana, Cameroon, The Gambia and Sierra Leone Women’s Cricket teams are all expected to arrive the country on March 26  for the event.

The opening match will be between Nigeria and Sierra Leonean side on Monday, March 28 at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos.
