Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa has described corruption as a monster impeding the development and growth of the country.
Bawa stressed the need for Nigerians to eschew and fight the menace for the country to witness unhindered growth and development.
The EFCC chief spoke when the Ogunruku family of Ido-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government of Ekiti State donated a six-bedroom apartment to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti (FETHI) in honour of their late son, Ifelola Otitowa Aina-Ogunruku.
Aina-Ogunruku was said to have died 10 years ago while in active service of EFCC in Abuja.
The EFCC chairman, represented by Mr Babatunde Ayodele, urged the gathering to always fight corruption which permeated every segment of our society.
He said: “Corruption is a monster and virus which had eaten deep into the system and holding the expected national development and growth in abeyance…”
Bawa said the Ogunruku family had demonstrated what the anti graft warrior stood for while in active service.
Appreciating the donor on behalf of the hospital’s board and management, Chief Medical Director Prof. Adekunle Ajayi acquainted the gathering with the historical transformations of the institution.
Ajayi, who lauded the Ogunruku family for looking into the needs of the hospital as highlighted during its maiden stakeholders forum in 2021, noted that the hospital had been receiving positive responses from corporate bodies and individuals.
Spokesman of the family and former Registrar of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State Mr Ayorinde Ogunruku said the structure was put in place from the death benefit paid by the commission.
He said the family agreed to immortalise Otitowa, who died as a bachelor.
Inaugurating the project, the Olojudo of Ido-Ekiti, Oba (Capt) Ayorinde Ilori Faboro with support from his friend, Oba Olatuyi Olatunde, the Onimesi of Imesi-Ekiti, appreciated the family for contributing to the development of the hospital.
