NIGERIAN Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has advised Nigerians to imbibe safety culture to reduce and eliminate hazards in the environment. The agency also called for a collective approach to safety if any impact must be achieved.

The Ibadan Regional Manager, Mrs. Toyin Emeordi, gave the advice at a lecture to mark this year’s global day of safety and health culture.

The event, which started with a road show at Ring Road, Challenge, and Adeoyo saw NSITF sensitising people on safety and healthy culture. Free medical checks were provided for officials and the public.

Mrs. Emeordi said this year’s theme: ‘Let’s act together to build a positive safety and health culture’, was to promote a culture of safe and healthy living, especially at the workplace. She added that the agency is joining the international community to create awareness to promote safety of workers in both formal and informal sectors.

She said: “The NSITF, being the sole agency implementing Employees’ Compensation Act 2010, which is geared at providing social protection in terms of compensation to employees and their dependants for injuries, disabilities, disease and death sustained during or in the course of work, view this exercise as cogent and expedient in ensuring workplaces and environments are safe for daily activities.”With the provision for claims as embedded in the scheme in respect of the above-listed, it is important to note that prevention of eventualities is better than resultant cure…’’
