A JOURNALIST with TVC and founder of Startlight Talents Foundation, Ola Awakan, has donated uniforms to his alma mater, WoWo Nursery and Primary School at Olodi-Apapa in Lagos State.
Awakan also donated copies of his book, Eko Poems: Anthology of Nursery Rhymes‘, to some pupils.
He said the gesture, which began last year during his birthday, was to fulfil the need to help others.
The journalist said: “Giving back was inspired by conditions of the community and mine when I was in primary school in Ajegunle. I feel the same thing should not happen to the pupils. They should be better persons, and efforts like this would help.
“There should be more of interpersonal communication with these kids. You don’t box them together; teachers should create time for one-on-one with the kids to understand them because they have peculiar difficulties, situations and pains. They should find a way to address it…”
A Social Mobilisation Officer at Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Education Authority, Oluwa Isa-Adeleke, hailed Awakan, saying: “This is an eye opener for others. People always remember their secondary schools and forget the ‘foundation’, which is main thing that shapes you to whatever you want to become. Thank God for Awakan, who came back to perform his social responsibility.”
The Headmistress, Mrs. Stella Ukamaka, said she wished others would emulate Awakan’s gesture.
