Second Republic Secretary to Lagos State Government (SSG) Olorunfunmi Basorun yesterday asked Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele to resign.
He said if he failed to quit, the Federal Government should relieve him of his position, having joined the presidential race on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Basorun, a lawyer and retired CBN deputy director, said it was dangerous for the economy if the governor of the apex bank retained his job while playing politics.
He said his foray into politics would distract him from focusing on his job as a key regulator of the economy.
Basorun, who spoke on the phone, said Emefiele could be accused of double loyalty and divided attention, especially since he had not refuted the report about his political ambition.
He advised him to resign or the Senate should rise to the occasion by sacking him.
Basorun said no CBN governor could be a thin god, urging Emefiele to learn from his predecessor.
He said: “It is a dangerous development for the governor of Central Bank to receive presidential nomination form, when he has not resigned. Therefore, if he has entered the race and he has not resigned, he should be sacked. He has moved into the murky waters of politics. It is a breach of his position. The Senate should remove him.”
Basorun alleged that the CBN under his leadership had failed to improve the lot of pensioners, stressing that while their pensions were to be reviewed every five years, the entitlements had been static.
“How can he have time for the job with full attention, having veered into politics. He should either resign or be sacked.”
