‘Southeast insecurity brings out the lion in us’

The Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, has said the force will ensure incidents of gunmen attacks in the Southeast are drastically reduced.

He said the force will take the battle to the criminals’ doorsteps.

IGP spoke through Deputy Inspector General in-charge of Research and Planning, Abuja, John Amadi, who was in Anambra State to honour departed colleagues DIG Joseph Egbunike and others who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Amadi, who doubles as supervising DIG for Southeast, was recently appointed to replace Egbunike who died after a brief illness.

He said, “I want to assure you that the IGP and his management team are doing everything possible to secure the country and provide enabling environment for people to go about their lawful businesses.

“Here in Anambra, the CP and his team are doing everything possible to ensure that these incidences of unknown gunmen are reduced to the barest minimum.

“You can attest to the fact that they’ve been recording successes and the officers have assured me that they are redoubling their efforts to ensure residents are safe and investors come in freely to do business.

“Hope isn’t lost, neither is the morale of the officers low because we’ve been talking to them. Rather, the unknown gunmen are bringing out the lion in us. We’re ready more than ever to confront this octopus that’s confronting us.

“We can’t discuss our strategies in the present circumstances. New policies have been adopted by various departments, with the heads taking the lead. The era of senior officers sitting in their offices are over.

Commissioner of Police Echeng Echeng regretted the security threats in the state but he said the Command will overcome the challenges using a new approach.
