A group, Gungbe Language Wikimedian Foundation, said it created Wikimedia user to establish identity for Ogu people living in Lagos and Ogun states.
Executive Director of the foundation, Samuel Okepefi, at a news conference yesterday in Badagry, said the group’s objective is to promote and preserve Ogu language, culture and heritage.
Okepefi said: “We want to stamp our language on the global map. Over the past months, Gungbe Wikimedians User Group, an officially- recognised affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation, has been working on making Ogu language visible on the internet.
“We are a non-profit, non-religious and non-political organisation. We train people such as students and fresh graduates on how to contribute to Wikimedia projects.
“In this age of technology, our objective is to leverage on Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia to promote Ogu language and culture.
“The foundation’s language committee has approved the creation of the Gungbe Wiktionary subdomain (guw.wiktionary.org). With this, Gungbe Wiktionary becomes one of the only two languages in West Africa to have an active Wiktionary.”
