No fewer than 1,061 persons have been killed in 175 terror attacks in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and four border states of Kogi, Kaduna, Niger and Nasawara, a group Nextier said yesterday.

It said its violent conflict database also recorded 1,152 kidnapped persons in Kaduna since last year, raising the alarm that the violence in the neighbouring states has left Abuja’s safety and security uncertain.

NEXTIER released the data in a report.

The group said: “Data from the Nextier Violent Conflict Database shows that in 2021, 19 violent incidents resulting in 23 deaths and 44 abductions were recorded in Abuja. However, in the first five months of 2022, 17 incidents leading to 12 deaths with 26 kidnap cases have been recorded.

“The statistics show that nearly all incidents recorded throughout 2021 have been witnessed between January and May 2022 in the nation’s capital. Some cases of violence include civil unrest, cultism and extra-judicial killings.

“Gunmen, assassins and hoodlums carried out the majority of these incidents. Although their nomenclature and motivations may differ, the spike indicates that Abuja’s safety and stability are arguably uncertain.

“Abuja may also suffer from neighbourhood effects. States such as Niger, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Kogi share borders with the capital city. They are also experiencing different levels of violent conflicts.”
