Firemen of the Federal and Lagos State Fire Services yesterday afternoon averted a fire disater after a tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) fell and spilled its content at Costain in Iponri area of the metropolis.

The tanker fell around 2pm while ascending the bridge and residents around the area trooped out to scoop petrol which spilled on the road and into drainages.

It was gathered that before the tanker fell, it rolled backwards and hit a car.

To prevent an explosion, firemen, who raced to the scene, cordoned off all access roads and started blanketing the infammable liquid.

They also sent messages across the neighbourhood, urging people to avoid lighting naked fires or doing anything that could cause an inferno.

Reacting to the incident, Director, Lagos Fire Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, urged the public to avoid combustible materials without the vicinity to prevent secondary incident.

Permanent Secretary, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said transloading of the product to another tanker was ongoing, urging the public to avoid the area and refrain from scooping of products.

“Residents should avoid lighting any naked flame until the situation has been fully contained,” he said.
