Ilorin residents decry dumping of refuse

Kwara news

Residents of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, have decried indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians.

They said such behaviour posed serious threat to the health of the residents.

The residents recommended penalties for those in the habit of littering the metropolis with waste.

They urged the state government to provide refuse bins in strategic areas of the metropolis, noting: “This will discourage those in the habit of desecrating the environment.”

THE Vice Chairman, Sabo-Oke/Ilupeju Community, Ilorin South Local Government, Nurudeen Bolanta, spoke with our correspondent in Ilorin when the youth wing of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, District Headquarters took its yearly community service to Ilorin streets.

The community service involved cleaning of the environment, medical check-up and food distribution to the less-privileged.

Bolanta said: “I advise the state government to ensure provision of refuse bins in parts of the community so that people will not dump refuse carelessly.

“In fact, I want the state government to arrest and prosecute those who dump refuse indiscriminately on road medians and other areas in the state capital. This will act as a deterrent to others.”

He hailed the sanitation exercise by the youth, admonishing other worship centres (churches and mosques) to borrow a leave from the youth.

Said he: “It will be ungrateful not to appreciate this gesture. If other mosques and churches in the community take a cue from these youths, our environment will be better off. I urge members of our community to be encouraged by this gesture to always ensure their surroundings are kept clean.”

The Women Leader in the community, Grace Ibironke, said the exercise would spur residents to take good care of their environment.

The President of youth wing of the church, David Awodola, said the gesture was a way of giving back to the society as well as propagating Jesus Christ.
