Crisis is brewing in Osun State over alleged plan by the Governor Adegboyega Oyetola administration to conduct local government election.
The opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), whose candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, won the last governorship election warned Oyetola against alleged plan of conducting council poll.
A statement by Osun PDP Director of Media, Oladele Oluwabamiji, said there was a pending suit before a Federal High Court in Osogbo with reference number FHC/OS/CS/94/2022, in which the PDP was challenging Osun Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) on the planned local government election.
“We affirm that under the Electoral Act 2022, notice of any election must be given not later than 360 days before the election, and nomination of candidates for the election must not be later than 180 days before the election, while publication of names shall be a period not later than 150 days before the election.”
During a monthly state briefing, the Executive Director of a civil society organisation, The Osun Masterminds (TOM),
Dr. Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, said: “We are aware of the accusations and counter-accusations between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the rumoured intention of the Oyetola-led government to conduct local government election before he leaves office in November.
“If the current government deems it fit to conduct a council election, it must only do so if all stakeholders, including the PDP, are carried along and all relevant laws are obeyed.”
