Onyekwere  Africa Discus  Champion

Disc thrower  Chioma Onyekwere  has predicted  Africa’s  total dominance of the  track & field event  after winning the women’s  discuss event at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The reigning African Games and African Championships champion late on Tuesday threw 61.70m in her fourth attempt to take the lead from home girl, Jade Lally who led from the start of the competition with her opening throw of 57.33m.

“It is amazing being my first Commonwealth Games and it is amazing getting out here to represent Nigeria and throw a season best (SB); this is a great testimony to my season,”  the 28-year-old said. “I know I have a lot to offer, and it was not great in the beginning of the year, and I am so grateful I could showcase what I have.

“It is absolutely Africa’s time to shine in the throw event and we deserve a spot among the top seed throwers in the world. I look forward to having more Africans competing in the field event, especially the throws.

“We are strong and powerful people, and I am expecting more for the future. I think Africa will surely make a big step at the world level.”

Onyekwere made history in Birmingham as the  first Nigerian woman  and indeed second Nigerian after Adewale Olukoju to win a discus throw title for Nigeria in the history of the Friendly Games.
