After making his full debut for Ajax against Sparta in the Dutch elite league, Nigeria international Calvin Bassey has said that he cannot wait to feature in this year’s UEFA Champions League (UCL)with the Dutch champions.
The Nigerian defender joined Ajax from Rangers and he has started to gel with the team following his display at the weekend in Ajax’s 1-0 win over Sparta.
“Playing in the Champions League would be a dream come true. I’m really looking forward to it and always want to test myself against the best players. Everyone with us can’t wait for the Champions League to start,” he told the club website.
He attributed his smooth integration into the Ajax’s defense to the support from his teammates: “The experienced players help me a lot, I think that’s important.
“I am grateful for the confidence of the team, the coach and the staff to put me up. That is a good feeling. Now I have to work hard and play better every game.”
The win away at Sparta ensured Ajax’s 100 percent record so far this seasons with three wins in as many matches much to the delight of Bassey who was satisfied with his performance.
He said: “Fairly, that’s all I can say. You have to build a relationship with teammates. They have to learn what I like and vice versa. We are in the build-up phase. It’s a matter of time before everything comes together.
“You have to do everything that has been said. Is sucked up by everyone like a sponge. The experienced players are top, they really help me and I think that’s important.”
He hailed his partnership with Jurrien Timber at the heart of the defence. “He’s one of the best young central defenders in the world right now. You can see his qualities and he’s a leader. He’s helped me and makes it easier for me. We’re getting used to each other. We’re both physically strong, fast and like to put a lot of pressure on it. The more often we play together, the better we complement each other,” Bassey said.
