Mother, accomplice in police net for selling three-week-old baby

The Police in Ogun State have arrested two women for selling a three-week-old baby to a yet-to-be-known buyer.

The baby was allegedly sold for N600,000 to an unknown buyer.

The mother of the baby, Mary Olatayo and Chioma Esther Ogbonna from Imo State, who facilitated the deal between the baby’s mother and the buyer, were arrested after the father of the boy reported the incident to the police.

Ogun Police spokesman SP Abimbola Oyeyemi told newsmen the baby’s mother and her accomplice were arrested on August 18, 2022.

Oyeyemi stated that the father of the baby told Mowe Divisional Police Headquarters that he dated Olatayo, who got pregnant, making him secure accommodation for her.

However, he complained after she delivered the baby boy, the lady suddenly disappeared with the child but she was later found in a hotel where she had gone for a hookup with another man.

All efforts by the father to know the whereabouts of the baby yielded no fruitful results.

According to Oyeyemi, the Divisional Police Officer, Mowe division, SP Folake Afeniforo, detailed detectives who arrested the suspect and brought her to the station.

Olatayo confessed to have sold her baby for N600,000 in connivance with Ogbonna, her friend, who led her to the buyer in Anambra State.

The police said the mother and her father shared the proceed from the sales.

Her confession led to the arrest of Chioma Esther Ogbonna who also corroborated Olatayo’s claims.

“Further investigation revealed Mary Olatayo a native of Omu- Aran in Kwara state is a call girl, who sees the baby as a disturbance to her business hence she decided to do away with the baby.

”Unfortunately for her, she has an accomplice in Chioma a native of Imo state who quickly contacted the buyer in Anambra state.

“The commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to anti human trafficking and child labour unit of the state criminal investigation Departments for further investigation. The CP also directed that everything possible must be done to recover the baby,” Oyeyemi stated.
