Police in Ogun State have arrested two women in connection with the sale of a three-week-old baby.
The baby was reportedly sold for N600,000.
The mother of the baby, Mary Olatayo, and one Chioma Esther Ogbonna, who reportedly facilitated the sale have been arrested by police.
The arrests were made after the father of the baby boy reported the incident.
Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi said the baby’s mother and her accomplice were arrested on August 18, 2022.
Oyeyemi quoted the baby’s father as saying the sold child was the result of his affair with Ms Olatayo, for whom he secured an apartment when she got pregnant.
However, after she was delivered of the baby boy, the lady suddenly disappeared with the child but was later found in a hotel.
All efforts by the father to know the whereabouts of the baby yielded no fruit.
Mary Olatayo has reportedly confessed to selling her baby to someone in Anambra State with the alleged connivance of her friend Chioma Esther Ogbonna.
The police said both shared the proceeds of the sale.
Her confession led to the arrest of Chioma who reportedly also corroborated Mary’s claims.
“Further investigation revealed that Mary Olatayo is a call girl, who saw the baby as a disturbance to her business, hence she decided to do away with the baby.
“The commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has ordered the transfer of the suspects to the anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of the state Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation. The CP also directed that everything possible must be done to recover the baby,” Oyeyemi said.
