FORMER Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II has charged Nigerians to engage presidential and governorship candidates for the upcoming general election on their plans for both the health and education sectors.
Sanusi made this call at the 10th year remembrance of the founder of St Nicholas Hospital, Dr. Moses Adekoyejo Majekodunmi in Muson Center, Lagos.
He noted that the healthcare sector which is vital to the country unfortunately gets little attention from political office holders.
“We want to hear these issues as part of the discussion in Nigeria. We should ask our political aspirants who are contesting for the upcoming president and governorship election, what their plans are for the primary healthcare system, and malnutrition and education sector in Nigeria.
“We must continue to ask them these questions, to enable us to elect the best candidates for the political positions, thereby avoiding regret for the next four years,” Sanusi said.
Sanusi, who applauded the management of St Nicholas Hospital and Moses Adekoyejo Majekodunmi Foundation (MAMF), said that the health profession must be supported and well respected.
“As a people and as a government, we have lost respect for the professions that should be respected. Teachers and doctors are not looking for money but they deserve a decent life and they deserve respect. You can’t treat your teacher as if they are nothing, you can’t teach your doctors as if they are nothing.”
