Three ‘killed’, others injured in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crashes

Three persons were yesterday feared killed and at least eight others injured in two separate accidents along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The accidents which occurred at sunset involved a Toyota Matrix and a truck at Oniworo, Ogun State, as well as a sugar-laden truck that gutted fire on Otedola Bridge, Lagos.

It was gathered that the Ogun accident had a burst tyre and rammed into a truck.

According to the spokesperson for the Ogun Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Florence Okpe, nine persons were involved in the accident.

She confirmed that three of the people died and four sustained injuries.

“The suspected causes of the crash were tyre burst and speeding on the part of the Toyota Matrix driver. He lost control of the wheels after a tyre burst and rammed on the truck.

“The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital Ogere for medical attention, while the corpses were deposited at the FOS Morgue in Isara.”

Similarly, the Otedola Bridge accident occurred around 6pm on the outward Lagos lane, causing traffic congestion on the entire road.

Permanent Secretary Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident said no death was recorded.

He said: “A truck conveying sugar engulfed by fire on Otedola Bridge outward Lagos. Initial information gathered revealed that the fire emanated from the truck head due to electrical fault.”
