Police in Edo State have arrested two suspects, Wilfred Egheaghe, 62, and Juliet Agboifo, 45, in connection with the theft and sale of a nine-day-old baby girl for N400,000.

Spokesman of the police command Chidi Nwabuzor told reporters yesterday that Egheaghe, a retired nurse, who owns Uyiosa Maternity  in Benin, allegedly sold the baby to Agboifo, a petty trader.

The baby’s mother, Prosper Peter, was yet to report the matter to the police, Nwabuzor said, adding that detectives acting on credible information arrested Agboifo where she was waiting to procure the child.

After her arrest, Agboifo reportedly led policemen to Egheaghe, who was also apprehended.

He said: “Egheaghe and Agboifo were taken to the police station for further interrogation. Upon preliminary investigation, the case was transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of Edo police command. The suspects will soon be processed to court.”
