Commission makes case for youths, women with disability

National Commission for People with Disability (NCPWD) Executive Secretary James Lalu  has said  that Nigeria is committed to implementing projects and programmes that aims to strengthen the leadership role of youth, women, ethnic minority, indigenous people and other marginalised group of persons with disability.

This, he said, include under represented group facing intersectional discrimination across all sectors in Nigeria. Again Nigeria commits to facilitating engagements with    Other Persons with Disability (OPD) in review of emergency disaster preparedness and response policy, which include procedures to ensure they are fully inclusive  of persons with disabilities. This include risk accessible information, evacuation processes, shelter and food, non food items and distributions.

The ES disclosed this at a news conference on the global disability summit 2018/2022 in partnership with Sight Savers Nigeria in Abuja, stating that the government also commits to mobilizing relevant actors to take proactive measures by increasing employment of persons with disability in humanitarian roles, especially, women, youths and those from under represented group.

He added that the government will also raise awareness in families and communities about the implication of the human rights model of disability, the importance of promoting social inclusion at the community level to advance inclusive education. The country also commits to take measures by ensuring that gender based violence risk mitigation and responses including sexual and reproductive health service are inclusive and accessible to women and girls including men and boys with disability.
