Board drives enrolment in Lagos public schools

Ahead of the new session on Monday, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board’s (LASUBEB’s) EKOEXCEL has asked parents and guardians to enrol their children for maximum learning gains.

EKOEXCEL is an educational intervention launched in 2019 by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to transform public primary schools through technology deployment.

It has recorded gains among teachers and pupils, leading to improved learning outcomes for pupils and professional teachers.

To ensure more Lagosians benefit from the intervention while reducing out-of-school children in alignment with the government’s ‘Leave No Child Behind Policy’, EKOEXCEL said its doors were open for fresh pupils.

“We are ready to receive returning and fresh pupils. Parents and guardians should know they have nothing to fear by sending their wards to us. Empirical findings show improvements in our schools, and we are not going to compromise standard,” Executive Chairman of LASUBEB Wahab Alawiye-King said.

He restated Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to education, saying parents and guardians don’t have to be indebted to send their children to school as the schools were free.

“Lagosians, enrol your children into public primary schools. We have facilities for them… Our innovative technology has improved pupil-teacher interaction and ensured learning extends well beyond classrooms,” he said.

LASUBEB organises campaigns to educate parents and guardians on enrolling their wards in public schools and reduce out-of-school children every new session.

Despite the state’s high literacy rate (96.5 per cent, second highest in the federation according to the National Bureau of Statistics), Lagos still has a high number of children not in school.

To further encourage parents, LASUBEB enlisted the support of famous Nollywood celebrities to educate parents and guardians on the gains of early childhood education. The board will adopt innovative and impactful ways to enrol children in primary schools.

Parents lauded EKOEXCEL’s impact, especially the performance of pupils in the last National Common Entrance Exams. Three pupils were just five points behind the overall best student, with 201 of 210.
