Lagos State has acknowledged the contributions of mothers living with disabilities and mothers of children with same challenge.
General Manager of the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA) Dare Dairo said their ‘immense contributions to the society cannot be ignored’. He stressed that ‘the world today must continue to appreciate their efforts with policies and programs that discourage stigmatisation’.
Dairo spoke at an event organised to celebrate mothers and children with disabilities in Lagos, with the theme ‘Investing in our future means investing in our children’. He said the event was to give more credence to the government’s policy of inclusiveness where no one is left behind.
He added: “Today’s programme is to celebrate our mothers because all the eulogies about mother is incomplete without infusing a special salutations for mothers who cater for children with special needs.
“Our culture is very particular about children, because when a woman marris, attention shifts to her, and if nothing happens after nine months, both families begin to mount pressure. Mothers especially receive more pressure for difficulties in child-bearing, and when the child eventually comes, but suffers any form of physical challenge, it then becomes another issue.
“Of all of those who have gone through this tedious process, there is no way we can pay them back, but to let them understand that they are appreciated. There is nothing we can give you that can compensate for all the time you carry your child alone, the time you spent, sacrifice made and efforts of the past.”
Guest Speaker Mrs. Folasade Ajayi encouraged mothers with children living with disabilities to be firm and courageous and not feel inferior about the challenge. She advised them to see education and exposure of their wards as a tool for development and independence.
Ajayi also admonished them to share their experiences as coping mechanisms, and ensure they belong to support networks that will help them to live well.
She said: “Sometimes, you are either born differently able or life happens to you. But we want you to know that there is ability in disability. Being disabled is not the guarantee for failure and stagnation; you are all warriors and overcomers.”
Highlight of the special event was the award presentation to outstanding individuals and Golden mothers in recognition of their efforts and contributions.
