Spanish outfit Real Sociedad has confirmed that Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar will undergo surgical treatment after he copped an injury in Sunday’s LaLiga match against Getafe.
The Nigeria International has been in excellent form as he scored on his debut with a well-deserved equaliser in the 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid- a day after he completed his switch from UD Almeria on transfer deadline. He was also in the mix as The White and Blues snatched a 1-0 away win against Manchester United in the Europa League match last Thursday.
Sunday’s game was Umar’s third with his new club but he barely lasted the first half of the encounter following an injury and was substituted by French teenage striker Mohamed-Ali Cho in the 38th minute. The coach Imanol Alguacil-led side subsequently lost 2-1 and the club yesterday confirmed the extent of the injury copped by the 25-year-old striker.
“Sadiq Umar suffered a right knee sprain during the Getafe-RS match, held yesterday,” the club stated on its website yesterday. “After the tests carried out today on the player, he has been diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in the right leg.
“He will start physiotherapy treatment. However, he will undergo surgical treatment.”
The club added ‘more information will be provided in the coming days’.
But further checks by NationSports revealed that athletes who suffered rupture of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament(ACL) , according to a health encyclopaedia, might be out for months depending on the extent of the injury.
“During ACL reconstruction, the surgeon removes the damaged ligament and replaces it with a segment of tendon — tissue similar to a ligament that connects muscle to bone. This replacement tissue is called a graft,” noted online platform Mayo Clinic. “In general, it takes as long as a year or more before athletes can safely return to play.”
