Three persons have been killed in Agosasa, a community in Ipokia council of Ogun State, as supporters of two claimants to the throne clashed.

It was learnt that there was an attempt to install an unpopular prince as the Oja of Agosasa.

The death of the first Oja, Oba James Elegbede, in February 2022, plunged the town into succession crisis.

On Sunday, some youths protested against the alleged bid by a prominent politician in the area to install a new monarch.

Five persons were hospitalised during the street protest.

In another protest, on Monday, one Nafiu Amosun, said to be the closest ally of the candidate being supported by the youths, was killed, allegedly by a member of one the parties in the oba tussle.

Amosun’s death triggered a reprisal, leading to chaos in the community.

Houses and vehicles belonging to Akeem Adigun, a former council chairman, Isiaka Aderounmu and others were set on fire.

Two more persons were reportedly killed in the counterattack.

Many have fled the troubled community, according to sources.

The Army, police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) battled to restore normalcy.

“At the moment, Agosasa is like a ghost town with heavy presence of soldiers and policemen. Residents are indoors while others have fled the town, some through the forest. It is getting out of hand,” a source said.

Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident, but said one person was shot dead.

Oyeyemi also said some suspects were arrested but did not say how many.
