Governors in the Northwestern part of the country, security chiefs from the states and their counterparts from Maradi Region of Niger Republic yesterday held a multilateral security stakeholders’ meeting on border security in Katsina.
Governors from Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi states convened the meeting and invited their counterpart from Maradi Region in Niger Republic.
They discussed the level of insecurity in Nigeria and Niger Republic and the slutions to the challenge.
Governors Aminu Bello Masari (Katsina), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto), Deputy Governors Samaila Yaubai (Kebbi), and Hassan Mohammed Nasiha (Zamfara), were present at the event with Maradi Region Governor.
The Northwest governors said they were alarmed by the high level of insecurity in the region and the border areas.

They noted that terrorists have been giving the citizens sleepless night in the region.
“Participants at this meeting are one family, hence, we deem it necessary to sort ourselves out at mitigating the menace,” the governors said.
Masari listed some measures his administration had taken towards addressing the matter.
The Katsina governor said his administration had, among other measures, built the capacity of traditional rulers and local government administrators to deal with emerging real and potential threats in their domains through local content initiative.
He said: “We also promote the concept of alternative dispute resolution mechanism, as provided by the state’s multi-door court process, enhancing and promoting inter-security agencies liaison through the establishment of joint operations and information-sharing platforms.”
Representatives of Kebbi and Zamfara states said Nigeria and Niger were facing common cross-border crimes of terrorism, armed banditry, illicit drugs trade and associated crimes.
