‘Plants crucial to human existence, survival’

Plants as primary sources of food are crucial to human existence, and planting a tree is symbolic to planting a life, District Governor of Rotary Club (District 9110), Omotunde Lawson, has said.

Lawson spoke at the closing of the tree planting campaign for Rotary Year 2021-2022 at the club’s district office in Ikeja.

She urged people to cultivate a green lifestyle through planting of trees, saying: “Tree planting has become an annual event for Rotary clubs… It is important for human beings to plant trees because he who plant trees plant lives…

“The importance of tree planting can also be understood through the stand of world governments which have criminalised indiscriminate tree felling, and encourage planting of two replacements if any tree must be felled. This is the way to go if the human race, and our world, must continue to exist.”

Chairman of the Environmental Committee Isola Ogunsola stressed the importance of tree planting, noting that the human race must live in a healthy environment.

He was optimistic about 80 per cent of the trees planted will survive because of the assurance of nurturing by pupils of schools the club adopted to participate in the programme.

‘’… We encouraged tree planting in schools, and adopted some schools so that the culture can be resuscitated and our children can get used to it. The pupils were glad to participate and they have promised to nurture them to maturity, so we are hopeful more than 80 per cent of these trees will survive and, in the coming years, provide shade for people who might not even know their origin.”
