Ondo community rejects regent after 16 years without king

Ondo

Members of Ipesi Akoko community in Akoko South East Local Government of Ondo State have rejected continued appointment of a regent for the community, 16 years after the demise of their king.

They staged a peaceful protest yesterday, saying the community lagged behind in terms of developmental projects.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as: ‘We don’t need Lagos Regent’, ‘We need an Oba’, ‘Ipesi has suffered enough give us an Oba’, ’16 years without an Oba, no more Lagos regent.’

Youth leader of the community, Mr. Katola Kayode, said the appointment of a regent was alien to Ipesi tradition.

A former supervising councillor in the community, Mr. Awolumate Akinwale, said the community might not witness development until an Oba was installed.

“We appeal to the state government to intervene. We need an Oba,” he said.
