NBS trains enumerators on labour force survey

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) have trained enumerators of National Labour Force Survey (NLFS) for 2022/2023.

The training, according to the Staticistian General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NBS, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran was to enhance National Labour force survey, which is a survey that gives indicators of unemployment in the country.

Speaking at the Ibadan Business School, Adeniran said though there are other indicators that can be derived from the survey what most Nigerians look out for in the survey was unemployment rate.

He lamented that unemployment has become an issue which Federal and State Governments have been trying over the years to tackle.

He maintained that NBS mandate was to give data to the government so as to come up with relevant policies, programs and projects that will address the unemployment issue but it have not been considered over the years.

“Users of our data complain about their inability to compare the data effectively with result from other countries, there are also other labour market indicators that they always look for in our survey result on labour force which they can not find.

“We have been working with the world Bank for the past six months to come up with a new methodology and new instrument to address all the shortfall in the way and manner by which we produce data for our labour force, we have reviewed the instrument to capture all request from our users.”

“The approach we are using to collect data now with the support of world bank and others stakeholders would allow us to release labour market data especially unemployment on quarterly basis not only for states alone but for the whole country.”

“At the end of the twelve months enumeration, we will have enough sample size to be able to disagregate data by state level, gender, location, level of education, so we are going to have comprehensive analysis and disagregation.”

The Staticstian General of Oyo State, A T Ajuwon said the survey is coming at a time where there is increase in demand for accurate statistics of poverty in the nation, adding that it would assist government to identify gaps and guide to facilitate development and revive employment.
